Another very simple example regards abstract functions. These are most often described as functions that have no implementation, existing only to establish their interface; one ascendant class in each lineage has the responsibility of establishing the implementation for that interface (and others have the option). But another type of abstract function has just enough implementation to establish how it uses other functions; this is commonly known as a Template mechanism type. (This is very appropriate for a framework.) In either case, an abstract function is meant to serve polymorphism, which requires a common interface. A class is abstract when it has at least one abstract function. (Java has a class type explicitly defined as an interface, which has all abstract functions. It is implemented [instead of extended] to a concrete class.)

n this chapter, we ll be examining what is, perhaps, the iPhone s defining feature: touch input. Although many devices have used touch screens over the years, the iPhone was the first to bring multitouch to the masses. It also takes a different approach to input in general. Where many have transferred desktop-style interfaces to touch-screen devices, using a stylus in lieu of a mouse, the iPhone creates a new set of conventions, swapping pointer accuracy for responsiveness, simplicity, and direct manipulation of the interface. iPhone s touch screen seems effortless to use, because Apple has spent a lot of time working out the subtle details. If you use the built-in controls, you can take advantage of this for free, but if you need to implement your own controls, paying attention to these details makes the difference between an application that is awkward and one that feels natural and iPhone-like. So in this chapter, we ll look at those details through the lens of Stage Hand, a remote control for Keynote (Apple s slick presentation package) and one of the first applications to appear in the App Store. Stage Hand required a lot of detail work for processing touch input. We ll look at why this is, how the problems were solved, and the general principles that can be applied elsewhere. We ll also put together a simple application that demonstrates a variety of touch gestures and the programming techniques behind them.

Another simple, but often frowned on, example regards the fact that ascendant functions can nullify ancestor functions (when they are virtual). Virtual functions are dynamically loaded, at execution, so they are meant to be dynamically replaced with overriding functions, but any can actually be overridden with a null function. This is discouraged because each child is supposed to either propagate or build on its parent s characteristics, but that can sometimes make extending a family complicated; and that s really not necessary, because a virtual function can be interpreted, in the vocabulary of a family, as a recessive gene (which might, in any generation, go away). Of course, this should probably be an exception, especially for considerations of memory usage.

Apigenin is a flavonoid found in parsley, artichokes, basil, celery, apples, onions, and other plants. It appears to counteract the induction of tumors by its effect on Phase I and Phase II detoxification, by increasing glutathione levels and by its antioxidizing activity. In the past several years, there have been many published reports on the protective effects of apigenin on the induction of cancer, especially skin cancer. Doctors Pelling and Birt, while conducting research at the Eppley Cancer Research Center, found that apigenin was a potent inhibitor of ultraviolet light induced skin cancer.
